The Donskoy Monastery was founded in 1591 in memory of the miraculous deliverance of Moscow from the invasion of the Crimean Khan Kazy Girey. Stone walls and towers were erected in 1686, in 1693 a new cathedral was consecrated in the name of the Don Icon of the Mother of God. Since the end of the XVII century. the monastery was the tomb of the Moscow nobility. At the monastery cemetery, the largest surviving in Moscow, the color of the Moscow nobility, many figures of Russian culture are buried.
