The Novodevichy Monastery was one of the monasteries-fortresses of the southern defensive belt that defended Moscow from enemy raids. Walls and towers altogether are a full-fledged fortress, built on the model of the Kremlin. Women from the royal family or noble boyars were nuns of the monastery.
